What is Gold?
Gold, priced in US dollars per troy ounce: the market’s oldest store of value.
Gold pays no interest and cannot be printed, so it is held as protection: against inflation, against a weaker dollar and against crises. Central banks hold it as a reserve and have been steady buyers in recent years.
Because it pays nothing, its main competitor is the yield on safe bonds. When real interest rates fall or the dollar weakens, gold tends to rise; when they climb, it tends to fall. In a shock, investors buy it first and ask questions later.
