What is Ether?
The largest platform for applications built on a blockchain, and the second-largest cryptocurrency.
Ether is the currency of Ethereum, the network most decentralised finance, stablecoins and tokenised assets run on. Every transaction pays a fee in ether, part of which is destroyed, and holders can stake their coins to secure the network and earn a yield.
It follows bitcoin most of the time, usually with larger moves, and adds drivers of its own: how much the network is used, how much is staked, and how activity shifts to the faster networks built on top of it.

- Maximum supply
- No fixed cap; part of every fee is burned

What moves the price of Ether?
- Bitcoin and risk appetite
- Ether rarely moves against bitcoin for long; the difference is the size of the move.
- Network activity
- Busy periods raise fees and the amount of ether burned; quiet ones do the opposite.
- Staking and ETF flows
- Coins locked in staking and flows in ether funds change how much is available to trade.
- Upgrades
- Scheduled network upgrades change fees, capacity and staking rules, and are traded in advance.
