Altcoin Prop Firm Guide: Trading SOL, XRP, DOGE and HYPE Perpetuals

Altcoins move further than bitcoin, with thinner books, lower leverage caps and a habit of falling together; here is how to trade them inside prop rules.

By the QATS team6 min read7 sections

Bitcoin usually sets the direction of the crypto market, but many traders look for an altcoin prop firm because they prefer the coins that move further: SOL, XRP, DOGE, HYPE, SUI and the rest of the large-cap list. Those moves come with thinner order books, lower leverage caps and coins that tend to fall together, which is where prop accounts often get into trouble.

This guide covers what to look for in an altcoin prop firm: which coins are offered and how they are priced, how leverage tiers work, why liquidity and correlation matter more than on bitcoin, and how to size each coin so that an ordinary day cannot reach the daily loss limit.

What an altcoin prop firm should offer

An altcoin prop firm account is only as useful as its coin list and its price source. Crypto-native firms usually model exchange perpetuals, the same USDT-margined contracts you would trade on Binance or Bybit, with funding and an order book. Forex prop firms more often offer a few large coins as CFDs, with lower leverage and a broker price feed.

Coin count varies widely. QATS Crypto evaluations include 17 USDT perpetuals, simulated on Binance and Bybit market data. Some crypto-native firms list far more; for HyroTrader, our comparison records “Simulated accounts on Bybit and BloFin demo data; 700+ USDT perpetuals on Bybit”. If you trade small caps, check the catalog before you buy; if you trade the larger coins, a shorter list with deep books may be all you need.

The QATS altcoin lineup and leverage tiers

Leverage on QATS Crypto plans is tiered by coin: up to 20× on BTC and ETH, 10× on large caps and 5× on other coins. The table lists every altcoin in the current Crypto lineup with its type and its maximum leverage. The instrument catalog inside the trading terminal is always the source of truth.

Why altcoins get lower leverage

Lower caps have a reason. Altcoin order books usually hold less size near the best price, daily ranges are wider, and gaps after news are larger. A cap that suits bitcoin could let a trader open a position the market cannot exit cleanly.

For your own plan the cap matters less than it seems: leverage sets the margin a position reserves, while the dollars at risk come from size and stop distance. If you size from the stop, a lower cap rarely binds.

Liquidity: the cost you do not see on the chart

On an altcoin, the price on the chart and the price you get can differ. A market order walks through the book, and on a thin coin a large order fills at several levels. Spreads widen in quiet hours and at weekends, and stop-market exits slip most in exactly the fast moves they are meant to protect against.

  • Prefer limit entries on smaller coins, and size for the slippage a stop-market exit may suffer.
  • Set a maximum slippage for market entries; on QATS the entry is refused if the book cannot fill your size within it.
  • Trade when volume is deepest, usually while European and US hours overlap, 13:00 to 17:00 UTC.
  • Be most careful at weekends, when one headline moves a thin book further.

Correlation: five altcoins can be one trade

Altcoins often follow bitcoin’s direction, usually with larger moves. Long SOL, SUI and AVAX at the same time is close to one large position on crypto risk appetite: if bitcoin turns sharply, all three stops can be hit within minutes of each other. For sizing, treat correlated positions as one trade.

This matters on a prop account because limits are measured on the whole account. On QATS Crypto, the 4% daily loss limit ends the evaluation when touched. Three correlated stops of 0.75% each make a 2.25% day, 56% of the daily limit, from what felt like three separate ideas.

  • Count the sum of all open stops as your open risk, and keep it below your personal daily stop.
  • Pick the best setup in a sector rather than taking all of them.
  • A long and a short in related coins reduces direction risk, but not liquidity risk.

Size each coin by its own volatility

Use the same dollar risk on every trade and let each coin’s daily range set the size. A coin that travels twice as far in a day needs a stop roughly twice as wide, and therefore half the position.

Coin-specific risks to plan for

  • Token unlocks: scheduled releases to teams and early backers add supply; SUI and HYPE both have release schedules worth checking.
  • Regulation and court news: XRP has moved sharply on rulings about its legal status.
  • Exchange news: BNB is sensitive to news about Binance as well as to the wider market.
  • Attention-driven moves: DOGE rallies on attention and reverses as fast, and liquidity can vanish in a sharp move.
  • Theme rallies: privacy coins such as ZEC rise in waves that can unwind quickly.
  • Funding regimes: ENA’s protocol relies on funding staying positive, so long stretches of negative funding can weigh on it.

FAQ4 questions

Frequently asked questions

01Which altcoins can I trade with a prop firm?

It depends on the firm. On QATS Crypto evaluations the current lineup includes SOL, XRP, BNB, DOGE, ADA, AVAX, LINK, LTC, ZEC, HYPE, SUI, NEAR, UNI, AAVE, ENA, alongside BTC and ETH. The instrument catalog inside the trading platform is the source of truth.

02Why do prop firms give less leverage on altcoins?

Altcoin order books are thinner and daily ranges wider, so firms cap leverage lower to keep positions within what the market can absorb. Leverage limits position size; it does not change the dollars you lose per move.

03Can I trade meme coins on a prop account?

Some firms list them. On QATS, DOGE is part of the Crypto lineup; check the instrument catalog for others, and consider sizing meme coins smaller because attention-driven moves can reverse quickly.

04Do altcoin positions share one daily loss limit?

Yes. Prop firm limits are usually measured on the whole account, so losses on several coins add up. On QATS Crypto, the 4% daily loss limit and the 6% maximum loss count losses across every position on the account.
