Prop Firm Stop Loss Rules: Mandatory Stops and Why They Matter

Some firms make a stop mandatory and many leave it to you, but every firm’s loss limits punish a trade that has none.

A prop firm stop loss rule is any condition that requires a trade to carry a protective stop, either from the moment it is placed or within a short time after. Some firms write it into their terms, sometimes only for expert advisors and bots; many others publish no such rule and leave protection to the trader.

Either way, the loss limits act as a stop of their own, closing or failing the account at a set level whether or not you planned the exit. This guide covers the forms a stop rule takes, why stops matter under loss limits, and how protective orders work on QATS.

What a prop firm stop loss rule can require

Where firms set a stop rule, it usually takes one of these forms. A rule that covers only automated trading is easy to miss if you trade manually and switch a bot on later.

  • A stop on every trade at the moment the order is placed.
  • A stop attached within a short window after entry, rather than at placement.
  • A maximum risk per trade, measured from entry to stop as a share of the account.
  • A stop requirement for expert advisors, bots or copied trades only.
  • No stop rule at all, with the daily and maximum loss limits doing the enforcing.

Which firms ask for stops

The stop-loss condition we have recorded on our comparison pages concerns The5ers. Our record of its automation policy reads: “Reported as allowed with a stop loss on every trade; we found no statement on the official pages.” Treat it as unconfirmed and check the firm’s current terms before relying on it.

If a firm’s terms mention stops, check when the stop must be in place, whether moving or removing it later is a violation, and whether the rule covers manual trades, bots or both.

QATS plan parameters do not include a mandatory stop-loss rule, so protective orders are optional on Crypto and TradFi accounts. The loss limits apply to every order regardless.

Why stops matter under daily and maximum loss limits

Many prop firms measure daily loss on equity, so an open position that moves against you uses up the allowance before you close it. Without a stop, the size of the loss is decided by the market and by the firm’s limit, not by you.

Take a $10K QATS Crypto evaluation. The daily loss limit is $400 (4%), it counts closed results plus open positions, fees and funding, and touching it fails the account. A BTC position worth $50,000 in notional terms, 5× the account and well inside the 20× maximum on BTC and ETH, loses that amount on a move of 0.8% against you. Crypto prices can cover that distance quickly.

The maximum loss, 6% trailing at the end of each day, works the same way over a longer horizon: equity at or below the floor breaches the account even if the position is still open.

A stop is a trigger, not a guaranteed price

A stop-loss order typically waits for its trigger price and then executes as a market order. In a fast market or across a gap, the fill can be worse than the stop price, and a large position may fill in parts. The planned loss is the best case, not the worst.

The QATS terms say the same: stops and protective orders follow the published fill model and gaps, and a stop price is not a guaranteed fill.

So leave room: if the daily allowance left is exactly the loss at your stop, a little slippage turns a planned loss into a breach.

Protective orders on QATS

Every order these tools create passes the same server-side rules as any other order, and none of them replaces the plan’s loss limits.

Stop-risk checks before the order is sent

In the QATS terminal, when a bracket is attached, the ticket refuses an entry whose stop would risk more than what is left of today’s loss limit, or more than the distance between equity and the account floor, and asks you to reduce the size or tighten the stop.

QATS Trade for Chrome shows the room left before the daily loss limit, the maximum loss and any personal daily stop. Confirmations say what the order loses at its stop against the room left before the nearest limit, and an unprotected order can carry a warning of how small a move would use that room up. An order whose stop would go past a limit always asks first, even with one-click trading on.

Cancel all in the Orders panel cancels entry orders and keeps position protection; cancelling an individual protective order removes it. After a partial close, check that the protective orders match the remaining size.

Stops on bots and API orders

Automated strategies need protection most, because nobody may be watching when the market gaps. On the QATS Trader API an order can carry a bracket, which needs both a stop and a target distance in whole ticks, plus an optional trailing distance:

"bracket": { "enabled": true, "stopTicks": 200, "targetTicks": 400 }

The protection attaches to the filled exposure. Stopping a strategy or disconnecting a browser does not necessarily cancel its working orders or close its positions, so make sure every automated position carries its own stop before you leave it unattended.

A stop-loss routine that fits the rules

  • Decide the stop before the entry and size the position from the stop distance, not from leverage.
  • Know the daily allowance left in dollars and keep the total risk at your open stops well inside it.
  • Attach protection at entry, then confirm the working stop and its size in Orders and Positions.
  • Move a stop only in the direction that reduces risk; widening it to avoid a loss turns a planned loss into an unplanned one.
FAQ4 questions

Frequently asked questions

01Do prop firms require a stop loss?

Some do, sometimes only for automated trades, and many publish no stop rule at all. Read the plan’s terms, including the FAQ, and check whether the rule covers manual trades, bots or both.

02Can I trade without a stop loss on QATS?

Yes. QATS plans do not make protective orders mandatory, but the loss limits apply to every position: on QATS Crypto, touching the 4% daily limit fails the account, and open losses count toward it.

03Does a stop loss guarantee I stay inside the daily limit?

No. A stop triggers a market order, and the fill can be worse than the stop price in a fast market or a gap. Leave a margin between your total stop risk and the allowance left for the day.

04Does a personal daily stop replace the firm’s limit?

No. A personal daily stop can be stricter than the firm’s rule but cannot enlarge it, and on QATS a triggered personal stop cannot be bypassed by raising the setting or reconnecting a bot during that session.
